The Homer Elks Lodge holds a party celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formal incorporation of the city of Homer. 

The event starts at 4 p.m. Monday at the Elks Lodge on Jenny Way, and includes a barbecue, a historical display and photos by the Pratt Museum, music, and story telling by Homer pioneers, including Mary Epperson and Stan Harrington. 

On March 31, 1964, just four days after the Great Alaska Earthquake, an Anchorage Superior Court judge approved a vote creating the city. On that day the newly elected Homer City Council also held its first meeting, electing Ralph Cowles as mayor. Deputy Magistrate Madeline Waterman swore in the council members. Nelda Calhoun was appointed city clerk.

“We hope this event will be remembered for another 50 years as we travel the second half of our first century here at the end of the road,” said organizer Dax Radtke.
