Birders watch shorebirds at Mud Bay on the Homer Spit on Saturday during the 22nd annual Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival. The migration peaked just as the festival started May 8, with 3,600 sandpipers seen on the Spit May 7 and 8,000 the following day. Birders also reported thousands of surfbirds and red-necked phalaropes on the bay. About 900 people registered for the festival.
