A 4.9 magnitude earthquake shook Homer and the lower Kenai Peninsula at 10:18 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10. Homer Police dispatchers received no calls of damage, said Homer Police Chief Mark Robl. The Grog Shop, a Pioneer Avenue liquor store, also had no damage, said owner Mel Strydom.

According to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Earthquake Center, the quake hit about 44 miles NW of Homer and 21 miles east of Mount Iliamna in the eastern Cook Inlet at a depth of 58.4 miles. On social media, some people reported hearing the quake before the tremors hit. Responses to the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Did you feel it?” website showed 67 people in Homer and 13 in Anchor Point who ranked the quake as a 3, or weak-to-light in shaking and damage.
