About 200 people turned out on a sunny Saturday to build the new Karen Hornaday Park Playground. Homer mom Bonnie Jason had imagined a new playground big and lively and safe. On Saturday, she got it. The idea came about as a way to celebrate Community Schools’ 20th anniversary. Volunteers raised $30,000 for the community-built project.

Bathrooms on the Homer Spit have been hit hard by vandals over the summer. Damage has included obscene graffiti and flushing objects like beer cans down toilets. Toilet paper rolls have been ripped out of holders and shoved down toilets. One custodian said he dreads Saturdays. He begins cleaning with a hose and shovel because of feces spread on the walls and floors.

In a vote of 169 for and 47 against in a June 27 special election, Homer city voters approved a $218,000 bond to extend city water to the Homer Spit industrial area. In other signs of progress, the Alaska Department of Transportation started work on paving about a mile of East Road. Further north along Turnagain Arm, contractors also began reconstructing and paving the Seward Highway.
