A homeowner found a 100-pound black bear entered her cabin through an unlocked door and got trapped when the door closed behind it. Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist Gino DelFrate shot it with a tranquilizer dart and killed it as a nuisance animal. The cabin had two full cans of garbage on the porch.

“This bear learned how to get into a house. That’s where we draw the line with bears in town,” he said.

The Tutka Bay Hatchery is gearing up to expand its operations. The facility has set a goal of 20 million eggs. The hatchery also will start a 5-year process to to switch production from pinks to higher value chums. In 1986 the hatchery released 3 million pink fry in Halibut Cove, 300,000 off the Homer Spit and 150,000 at Ingram Creek near Portage.

The Polar Pioneer docked at the Homer City Dock on July 10, offloading about 25 tons of cargo. It was the first steamship to call on Homer since the 1964 earthquake. The Polar Pioneer plans on monthly service and will return in August. If cargo traffic warrants, twice-monthly calls will be scheduled.
