Visiting artist Jack Dalton presents a staged reading of his libretto, “Ada — An Opera of The Arctic,” at 8 p.m. Sunday at Bunnell Street Arts Center. Donations are accepted as admission to the event.
Dalton’s libretto is based on the true story of Ada Blackjack, an Inupiaq woman who in 1921 went on an expedition with four men to Wrangel Island near Russia in an attempt to claim the island for Canada. When the settlers ran out of food, three men left Blackjack behind in search of rescue. They were never seen again. Another man died, and Blackjack was the only survivor when rescued in August 1923.
Dalton is currently Bunnell’s artist in residence and has been working on “Ada” during his stay.
