Hospice of Homer is holding its annual “Holes Fore Hospice” fund-raising event from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 9 at Tips Golf Course on East End Road.

Individuals or teams are welcome to register now at the Hospice website: HospiceofHomer.org or register at Tips at 9 a.m. the day of the event. There will be food for everyone and awards for winners.

Homer Native Plant Society Field Trip: “Lichens and Moss” with Ed Berg from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at the Calvin and Coyle Trail.

Ed leads this botany walk each year because of the amazing plant life found on this short 1.5-mile walk.

You’ll pass through a spruce and alder forest and wetlands with interesting lichens and mosses. A hand lens or magnifying glass is useful and as are waterproof boots.

There’s still room for 5 more people on the Microalgae Field Trip to Seldovia with the Homer Native Plant Society from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 16. With Tania Spurkland, participants will explore the biodiversity of Seldovia’s macroalgae on a minus 5.1-foot tide. the group will depart Homer at 8:30 a.m. aboard Red Mountain Marine’s Beowulf for Jakolof Bay, explore other beaches, and leave Jakolof Bay at 4:30 p.m. for a 5 p.m. arrival in Homer. Dress in layers and wear rain pants over your highest rubber boots. Bring water, a sack lunch, scissors, ziplock bags, a permanent marker, heavy duty rubber gloves, and a bucket. Anchor Point Senior Citizens

The Anchor Point Senior Center on Milo Fritz Road is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-noon Friday. The center serves Thursday night dinners starting at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Bingo is at 6:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. on Friday nights. The Helping Hands Thrift Store is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exercise sessions are at 10 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. For information, call 235-7786.

Friendship Center

Homer Senior Citizens

Homer Senior Citizens lunch is open to seniors and guests and is served noon-1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The menu for this week is: Thursday, roast pork; Friday, salmon; Monday, vegetable quiche; Tuesday, chicken parmesan; Wednesday, meatloaf; next Thursday, turkey.

Strong Women classes are 1:30-2:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Homer Senior Center. Zumba Gold classes with Maria are 11 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Homer Senior Center.

South Peninsula Hospital

The Homer Steps Up community steps challenge ends Thursday, May 31 at 11:59 p.m. All steps must be logged in to individual participant accounts on the event’s website by Friday, June 1 at 11:59 p.m. If you need assistance logging your steps contact the SPH Wellness Department at 235-0970.

The total steps goal for this first annual community-wide event was 100 million steps in the month of May. More than 300 individuals are actively participating, vying for weekly and challenge-long prizes. The grand prize of $500 is donated by the SPH Foundation, and numerous other sponsors are contributing to other cash and merchandise prizes. The final number of steps will be announced at the End-Of-Challenge Party on Saturday, June 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the Homer Farmers Market. Everyone is encouraged to walk, bike or carpool as parking is limited at the event. High steppers and individual winners within categories will be announced then, and the winning team will be awarded the Homer Steps Up Trophy. There will be door prize giveaways.
