The Kenai Peninsula Borough reminds homeowners and snow removal crews that it is illegal to push snow from private property into the roads, ditches and rights-of-way. Snow berms create an obstruction hazard and sight problems to snow removal equipment and drivers. Plowing snow into rights-of-way creates additional costs and delays to crew having to move the snow back. Please refrain from putting snow in rights-of-way. The borough also reminds parents to warn children of the danger of playing in snow piles and berms near roadways. Equipment operators may have difficulty seeing children.

The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies is ready to enroll local businesses in a local Green Star program, a satellite of the Alaska Forum Green Star Program operated in the Anchorage/MatSu area. CACS presents a program from 5-7 p.m. March 16 at Grace Ridge Brewery to discuss the Green Star and its marine debris, CoastWalk and Zero Waste Schools programs. Green Star is an organization committed to helping businesses lower their ecological impact and recognizes those who take steps to increase their environmental sustainability. As an expansion of its marine debris program and efforts to support the reduction of single use plastics and other waste that can enter the marine environment, CACS will be taking the lead on expanding the program to the peninsula with a goal of 20 new business enrollees. Thanks to a grant from the NOAA Marine Debris Outreach and Education program, CACS is able to offer the first 20 businesses to enroll a $100 scholarship to reduce the cost of membership. After enrollment, the Green Star team will work with your business to evaluate current practices and make recommendations for improvements. Anchor Point Senior Citizens

South Peninsula Hospital

South Peninsula Hospital will offer a safe sitter class during school spring break on Thursday and Friday, March 16 and 17. The class is designed for students in sixth-eighth grades and teaches basic child care, infant and child CPR, first aid, safety for the sitter, behavior management and business etiquette. The class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises to prepare students for when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting. Students even get to use manikins to practice rescue skills like choking rescue and CPR. The class will run from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. both days. Pre-registration is required.
