Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships, or MAPP, of the Southern Kenai Peninsula will release the 2016 community health needs assessment at its quarterly meeting on Friday at Pioneer Hall, Kachemak Bay Campus. MAPP conducts a community health needs assessment of the southern Kenai peninsula every three years, the results of which are used to inform and direct community coalition and agency work. The meeting runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Other agenda items include workgroup reports and recent successes related to MAPP’s current health improvement priority to increase family well-being.

The Kenai Peninsula Fair Association holds a Christmas Bazaar from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds in Ninilchik. More than 60 vendors will sell handmade crafts and other items. Santa visits from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and there is a tree lighting at 6 p.m.

SPARC, the South Peninsula Amateur Radio Club, holds an FCC Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) License Test Session from noon-3 p.m. Saturday in the Homer Public Library Conference Room. In preparation for the Christmas Bird Count, Dave Erikson presents a class, “Winter Bird Identification,” from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center in the Seminar Room. Dave is a master birder and excellent teacher, and this will be the 40th consecutive year he has coordinated the bird count. His class provides a review of the wintering birds here in Homer for volunteers who plan to help with the count, but would also be of great benefit to any new birders in the area who are interested in learning about our winter resident birds. The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) offers a 10-hour Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshop in Homer from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Best Western Bidarka Inn, 575 Sterling Highway. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for commercial fishermen and other mariners to gain hands-on training with marine safety equipment and learn best practices for surviving emergencies at sea. Instructor Rob Hulse covers cold-water survival skills; EPIRBs, flares, and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs; helicopter rescue; life rafts; abandon ship procedures, and emergency drills. There will be an in-the-water practice session, giving participants practical experience with PFDs and immersion suits, employing survival techniques, and righting and boarding an inflatable life raft. AMSEA Drill Conductor workshops meet the training requirements for drill conductors on board documented commercial fishing vessels operating beyond the federal boundary line. Homer Senior Citizens lunch is open to seniors and guests and is served noon-1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Pratt Museum

The museum gallery winter hours are noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Business offices are open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Admission is free during December. The museum is closed Dec. 23-26 and Dec. 30-31. The galleries are closed for the month of January for maintenance.
