There will be a Homer Native Plant Society Meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 at the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. The presentation will be “Ecology and Conservation of Native Orchids, including Alaska,” with Dennis Whigham, PhD.

A senior botanist with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and founding director of the North American Orchid Conservation Center (NAOCC), Dr. Whigham has researched plants around the world, from orchids, vines, wetland species, and to forests, including orchids, from Florida to Alaska. Wanderlust Wednesday with Homer youth is 5:30-6:30 p.m. March 7 at Grace Ridge Brewing. For week three of the series, Casey Fetterhoff shares stories and images from his time volunteering in the West Bank.

He will talk about the places he explored as well as the experiences that impacted him in both positive and challenging ways, including witnessing moments of violence and moments of strength, courage and hope. The event is free and all are welcome.

Youth can attend with a parent or guardian. Beer and nonalcoholic beverages are available; bring your own snacks. Come curious, leave inspired.

Anchor Point Senior Citizens

The Anchor Point Senior Center on Milo Fritz Road is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-noon Friday. The center serves Thursday night dinners starting at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Curator’s Closet: 50 Years of Collecting at the Pratt Museum. — In anticipation of the Pratt Museum’s 50th Anniversary, current and former Collections staff collaborate to share some of their “favorite things.” Take a dive into the Museum’s collections, and consider: what do we value as a community? Exhibit is on display in the Special Exhibits Gallery through April 28.

Behind the Scenes Collections Tours — These will start at 2 p.m. on Thursdays, starting today. In conjunction with the Curator’s Closet exhibit, Behind the Scenes Collections Tours will be offered. Get up close to the thousands of wonderful historical objects kept in the Pratt’s Natural History and Cultural Collections. The tours cost $5 per person.

Ongoing activities: Fish Feedings have resumed from 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays in the Marine Gallery. Help feed the intertidal creatures in the aquaria. Fish Feeding is fun and all are welcome.

South Peninsula Hospital will offer a Safe Sitter Class including the essentials with CPR from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 16.

Safe Sitter is designed to prepare students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. This instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use manikins to practice rescue skills like choking rescue and CPR.

Join South Peninsula Hospital and Greg Hough, MD at SPARC (600 Sterling Hwy next to Homer Middle School) for the next “Walk with a Doc.”

All are welcome from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, March 3 to hear a brief talk on colon health and the value of colon cancer screening by Dr. Hough, general surgeon. Spend the rest of the hour walking at your own pace, chatting and asking any questions.

This is a free event, open to all ages and abilities. There is parking up at the SPARC and down below in the Homer Middle School Parking lot. There will be free blood pressure screenings, prizes and refreshments.
