Saulitis memorial reading is Friday at KBC

The Kachemak Bay Campus sponsors a memorial reading for Homer writer Eva Saulitis at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the campus. Saulitis, 52, died Jan. 16 of breast cancer. People are invited to bring a short excerpt of Saulitis’ prose and poetry. Bring finger foods to share following the reading.

An instructor at KBC and at the annual Kachemak Bay Writers Conference, Saulitis wrote numerous essays and five books of poetry and nonfiction, including “Into Great Silence,” about her work with killer whales in Prince William Sound. A full obituary is in this week’s Homer News.

Saulitis also will be honored with the Homer Council on the Arts Lifetime Achievement award at HCOA’s annual meeting and Arts Award ceremony starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday at HCOA.

Dunlap-Shohl speaks on new book Feb. 4

Anchorage artist and writer Peter Dunlap-Shohl visits Homer next week on a book tour for his graphic-memoir, “My Degeneration: A Journey Through Parkinson’s.” At 6 p.m. Feb. 4, Dunlap-Shohl speaks at the Homer Public Library. 

The Homer Bookstore will have copies of his book available for sale and signing. At 1 p.m. Feb. 5, Dunlap-Shohl also speaks at the Parkinson’s Support Group at the Homer Senior Center. Both meetings are free and open to the public.

A former Anchorage Daily News cartoonist, Dunlap-Shohl has written a book in comic-strip form about living with Parkinson’s Disease. Published by Pennsylvania State University Press, “My Degeneration” is part of its Graphic Medicine series of books about medicine told in comic form.
