Sklyanskaya presents piano concert

Chicago pianist Olga Sklyanskaya performs in concert at 2 p.m. Aug. 30 at Bunnell Street Arts Center. She plays the French Suite in G Major by J.S. Bach, 10 Lyric Pieces by E. Grieg and Images, Book 1 by C. Debussy. Tickets are $10. 

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Sklyanskaya started playing the piano at age 6. In 1994 she moved to Chicago with her family. She received a bachelor and master of music in piano performance from DePaul University School of Music, Chicago. She now works as an accompanist at the Bieren School of Music and performs nationally and in the Chicago area. She also has a private piano teaching studio and is organist at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Franklin Park, Ill.

 

Burning Basket build week starts Sept. 6

Build week is noon-8 p.m. Sept. 6-12 at Mariner Park for “Reach: A Basket of Remembrance and Unburdening,” Homer’s 12th annual Burning Basket. Everyone is invited to help build the woven sculpture. Public interaction and burning at sundown is on Sunday, Sept. 13. Mavis Muller is the lead artist and coordinator.

HCOA seeks art for ‘Loss’ show

The Homer Council on the Arts seeks submissions for a community art show, “Loss,” to be done in conjunction with a visit by Letters Aloud in November. Letters Aloud reads and dramatizes letters on a variety of subjects. On Nov. 10, Letters Aloud performs “Fame,” letters about fame from the famous. In collaboration with Hospice of Homer, Letters Aloud also does a private performance, “From the Front Lines,” for veterans and in honor of Veterans Day.

For the art show, “Loss,” all mediums of art will be accepted. The theme is not exclusive to wartime loss, and explorations of any kind on the theme of loss are welcome. Letters of intent to exhibit in the show should be submitted by Oct. 1 to HCOA by calling 235-4288 or emailing hcoa@homerart.org.
