KBC student art show opens Friday
Students from Asia Freeman’s drawing class show their work in a Student Art Showcase this month. The exhibit opens with a reception from 5-6:30 p.m. Friday in the Kachemak Bay Campus Pioneer Hall Commons gallery.
HHS students present ‘Colors of Homer’
Homer High School students present “Colors of Homer: Live in the Commons” at 6 p.m. Saturday in the high school commons. The evening includes music, entertainment and, new for this event, a student-led fashion show. Snacks will be provided. There also will be a used fashion boutique, with proceeds benefiting the Homer High Art Program.
Indigo Girls added to Salmonfest line-up
Salmonfest has added singer-songwriter duo The Indigo Girls to its all-star line-up. Running Aug. 5-7 at the Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds in Ninilchik, early-bird rates end at midnight today. Tickets are $120 for a 3-day pass, $100 for a 4-pack 3-day pass (four adults purchased together) and $95 for a teen or senior 3-day pass. Children age 12 and younger get in free with a paid adult. Tickets are on sale at salmonfestalaska.org.
Salmonfest has become recognized both nationally and within the state as one of the top outdoor music and camping events in Alaska. Many of Alaska’s top food, crafts, art and beer vendors are presented throughout the grounds. The festival promotes a family friendly atmosphere including a daily children’s program that includes crafts, a giant bounce slide, spin toys and more. Cook Inletkeeper has joined the festival as a primary sponsor and partner in Salmonfest’s “fish first” advocacy and educational component. Kachemak Bay Conservation Society remains the steward organization.
Ratfish Wranglers play for Earth week
Ray Troll and the Ratfish Wranglers perform at 8 p.m. April 23 at Alice’s Champagne Palace. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Sponsored by Salmonfest, the concert also is the kick-off event for the 2016 festival on Aug. 5-7 at the Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds, Ninilchik. The Ratfish Wranglers play “fishy science music,” as Troll describes it.
One of Alaska’s more popular artists, Troll has become known for his playful, science-themed designs that appear on everything from coffee labels to T-shirts. Troll also does a drawing class from 1-3 p.m. April 23 at the Homer Council on the Arts.
Perry signs new book at Homer Bookstore
Author Mary Haakenson Perry signs her new book, “Mystery on Cheechako Island,” from 1-3 p.m. April 30 at the Homer Bookstore.
With a cover and illustrations by Homer artist Dan Coe, and published by Wizard Works in trade paperback, thebook is $10.95.
