Alaska Bureau of Highway Patrol Troopers at 8:45 p.m. went to a report of a 2008 Ford Explorer in the ditch near Mile 114 Sterling Highway. Troopers identified the driver as a 45-year-old Ninilchik man and arrested him for driving under the influence and failure to provide an ignition interlock device on his car.

Dec. 23

Alaska State Troopers at 5:48 p.m. made a traffic stop on the driver of a Toyota SUV driving on the wrong side of the road near Mile 98 Seward Highway. Troopers and another car had to take evasive action to avoid a head-on collision with the car. Troopers said the driver, an 84-year-old Homer man, drove without his glasses and couldn’t see the road or tell he was in the wrong lane. Troopers cited him for reckless driving and driving in violation of a license limitation. A family member from Anchorage responded and took over control of the car.

Dec. 24

Highway troopers at 1:17 a.m. stopped the driver of a 2007 Dodge truck on Pollard Loop in Kasilof. Troopers said a passenger in the car, a 44-year-old Ninilchik woman, gave a false name and was later found to have two outstanding arrest warrants with a total bail of $300, one for failure to comply with alcohol safety action program screening and another for failure to appear in court on a driving while license revoked charge. Troopers arrested her on the warrants and for a charge of providing false information. Troopers allege she also brought a controlled substance into Wildwood Pretrial Facility and charged her with fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance and first-degree promoting contraband.

Dec. 25

Troopers at 1:27 p.m. went to a 911 call of a single-car rollover near Mile 142 Sterling Highway north of Happy Valley. Ninilchik Emergency Services also responded. Troopers and emergency medical technicians found a 65-year-old Ninilchik man, the driver and sole occupant of a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, outside his car and unconscious and not breathing. Life-saving efforts were made but were unsuccessful, and the man was declared dead at the scene. Troopers said the man had been driving north when he crossed the centerline, drove onto the southbound lane, overcorrected and lost control of his car. The car then went into the northbound lane and back into the southbound lane, where it flipped in the southbound lane ditch. The man did not wear a seatbelt and was thrown from his car. Next of kin were notified. Troopers said alcohol did not appear to be involved.

Dec. 26

Troopers and the Anchor Point Volunteer Fire Department at 9:06 p.m. went to a residential fire on Chakok Avenue in Anchor Point. Troopers found a live-in style travel trailer to be fully engulfed in flames. Troopers could not find anyone on the property and could not locate the owner of the property, a 33-year-old Anchor Point man. After the fire was put out, as troopers left the scene they contacted the owner walking away on the North Fork Road. Troopers said the man had a rifle and a concealed handgun and refused to let them secure the firearms. Troopers arrested him for misconduct involving weapons. A later investigation showed that the trailer that burned belonged to another person who had parked it on the Anchor Point man’s property with his permission. Troopers allege the man set fire to the trailer due to a disagreement with the trailer’s occupant and then fled the scene and hid in the woods while troopers and firefighters responded. During a search of the man, troopers also found marijuana. They arrested him for second-degree arson, fifth-degree misconduct involving weapons and sixth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance.
