Now in its 40th year, Homer’s Rotary Health Fair returns on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Homer High School commons and gymnasium. The theme for the fair this year is “It’s Your Life…Take a Day to be Well.” The event is sponsored by the Homer Kachemak Bay Rotary Club in cooperation with South Peninsula Hospital.
The free one-day event offers the community the opportunity to learn about local health services available and current information on health topics. This year 60 exhibitors will offer various health screenings, demonstrations and services. These will include free flu shots, blood pressure and vision tests, diabetes risk assessments, chair massage and more. Exhibits will provide information on subjects ranging from sleep medicine, pet safety, senior services, tobacco education, information on Parkinson’s disease, CPR, vitamin D and medication assisted treatment for addiction.
Examples of exhibitors include All Things Recovery, Breathe Free Gulf Coast Coalition, Homer Massage Therapy, Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic, Rotary Foreign Exchange, several South Peninsula Hospital facilities, Whole Mind LLC, WIC Alaska Family Services and many others.
The fair will also provide several door prizes throughout the day and children under 10 years old can exchange for alternative prizes at the Great Candy Exchange.
Derotha Ferarro with South Peninsula Hospital said discounted appointments for blood draws at the hospital are being offered through the fair.
“Last year nearly 900 people got their blood drawn; as of Sunday … we have had over 500 clients, and might reach 900 by Friday,” she said in an email. There are also appointments available by sponsorship from some local employers, she said. That information can be found via the blood test link on the Rotary Health Fair website.
