Multimedia works celebrate the seasonal transition to winter

Homer’s galleries and public art spaces celebrate the seasonal transition from autumn to winter. Stroll the galleries, meet the artists and enjoy the variety of mediums on display in these new exhibits of work by local and statewide artists.

Art Shop Gallery

“FACETS” — Fused glass, silk and felt work by Nancy Wise

Opening Reception, 5-7 p.m.

Art Shop Gallery hosts multi-media artist Nancy Wise and her exhibit “FACETS,” a showcase of fused glass, silk and felt work. A Homer-area resident for 40 years, Wise has been represented by galleries and exhibitions locally, statewide and nationally and has taught across Alaska as an Artist in the Schools. Her fused art glass and up-cycled float glass pieces are bright, fluid and practical and her felt work includes landscapes, flowers and other imagery. “In Memory Of…,” a 10×10 Members’ Exhibit

Bunnell Street Arts Center presents “In Memory of…,” their annual 10×10 Members’ exhibit. The theme, “In Memory of…” was intended to provide space for artists’ reflections and to honor the people, places and experiences that shape them, inviting expression of grief and loss as well as of joy and love. This Artist Membership Drive and Exhibit call welcomes more than 20 new artist members this year and supports artists at all stages of their careers with a professional development opportunity and an opportunity for collectors to gift or acquire art during the holiday season. “Study in Portraiture,” watercolor paintings by the Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society

Fireweed Gallery presents “Study in Portraiture,” watercolor paintings by several members of the Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society. Each fall, KBWS offers members a workshop to challenge their artistic skills and provide an opportunity to learn new techniques. This fall’s workshop was portrait painting, instructed by guest watercolor artist Faelin Linn from California. Work by artists from Homer and Soldotna will be on display. Weaving Demonstrations, Community Weaving and Handwoven Work by Bonita Banks and Lisa Talbott of Kindred Spirits Weaving Studio

Grace Ridge Brewing showcases work by Bonita Banks and Lisa Talbott of Kindred Spirits Weaving Studio. The artists will provide demonstrations on rigid heddle weaving and making Dorset buttons and lead participation in a community weaving project. On display will be a variety of handwoven items, including shawls, scarves, dish towels and table runners, as well as mixed media jewelry, holiday ornaments and more. “Fun With 5×7” Community Art Exhibit

Homer Council on the Arts presents “Fun with 5×7,” a small works show that challenges artists to think inside the box, experiment and try something new. An open call for art from all ages, abilities, mediums and subjects, the exhibit features a wide variety of work by a myriad of artists and creators. Ptarmigan Arts introduces Michelle Anderson, the newest member of the gallery, exhibiting beaded jewelry, beach-themed, found-object fish skin, fireweed root baskets, handsewn Alaskan clothing and other items. Raised in Clark’s Point and a Homer High School graduate, Anderson has lived most of her adult life in Chignik Lagoon. Her creativity is inspired by these places and the peoples there. The Dean Gallery

The Dean Gallery is family-owned and features contemporary art by M’fanwy, Ranja and Jeff Dean. This month, The Dean Gallery hosts an Open Studio, highlighting sculptures and wall art, including Jeff’s recently completed commission, “Sea Dragon in a Rain Storm,” a 14-foot-long, heat-colored steel engraving with cherry accents, and progress on the 11.5-foot-long “Ice Whale” engraving he is making for the Kivalina School. In the gallery are also intricately carved wood panels, bronze sculptures, metal and wood wall art, seed bead jewelry and specialty prints on metal, wood, and paper.
