On Saturday, the Inlet Wind community band will perform a concert at the Homer Mariner Theater at 7 p.m.
Presented by Homer Community Recreation, the free event will feature a variety of instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, percussion and more. The band is currently directed by Eric and Mary Simondsen.
Eric Simondsen said the band was re-formed due to community demand.
“I was conducting “Beauty and the Beast” in October and I kept hearing from community members the desire to play instruments. I worked with Mike Illg with Homer Community Recreation manager to get it going again and really I was surprised at how many people showed up and wanted to play,” he said.
The band currently has almost 40 members and Simondsen expects all of them to perform in the Saturday concert. They rehearse once each week on Mondays for two hours but will have one additional dress rehearsal on the stage in preparation for the show on Saturday this week.
This summer the group will not meet due to lack of certainty about suitable space with roofing repairs scheduled for the high school. The long-term goal is to work project to project with probably two to three concerts each year, Simondsen said.
“That gives the people who are involved the chance to commit to what we are doing,” Simondsen said.
