Homer’s Best Bets

Buckle up, Betster persons. It’s Dec. 2, and Homer holiday fun starts with a bang this weekend. Put down that snow shovel and get out and enjoy these best bets:

BEST HOLIDAY BET: Christmas lights, snow, spending time with friends and family, lots of rich food — that’s what the holiday season is to the Betster! There are so many ways to celebrate the holidays in Homer, so check out these events this weekend to get you in the spirit! Come light the holiday tree with the Homer Chamber of Commerce Thursday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. and listen to Christmas carols while drinking hot chocolate. Children will also have a chance to meet Santa Claus and let him know all of the sweet treats they want.

The holiday festivities continue this weekend with the Homer Council on the Arts Nutcracker Faire from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Homer High School. The event will be full of chances to purchase locally-made crafts and artwork that make great Christmas presents!

Also this weekend at Homer High School, the Homer Nutcracker Ballet returns for its 33rd year. Tickets can be purchased Friday in the Wild Berry Building on Pioneer Avenue or at the theatre door close to show time if there are any available. Tickets cost $17 for adults and $12 for youth and can be purchased with cash or checks. Masks are required at all shows and when purchasing tickets. Seating in a vaccinated section will also be available.

BEST ARTS BET: Want to get out this Friday and check out some local artists’ works? December may only have a few First Friday events, but they are sure to impress. Bunnell Street Arts Center features the work of artist-naturalist Kim McNett, with her show, “Naturalist’s Notebook.” An adventurer as well, McNett has traveled much of Alaska by human power, particularly fat bike and pack raft. Bunnell’s resident artist this month, she holds open studios and workshops. At Ptarmigan Arts, the member-run Back Room Gallery this year started a new approach to traditional, month-long shows with First Friday receptions. Instead, they hold weekend “pop up” shows on any weekend of the month. This weekend’s show is by ceramic artist Jeff Szarzi.

BEST ICE HOCKEY BET: The Homer Mariners take on Juneau this Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. at the Kevin Bell Arena. Show off your Mariner pride and support the team!
