Homer students win in ‘F’ contest

Six Homer students won in the writing categories of F Magazine’s Alaska Statewide Youth Arts and Writing Contest. Homer High School junior Jonas Noomah also won a scholarship to the Sitka Fine Arts Camps for his Flash Fiction story, “January Creek.” Noomah also plays marimba in the youth-adult ensemble, Williwaw.

Categories in which Homer students won are:

• Essay: 1st place, Molly Mitchell, Homer High, grade 10; 2nd place, Autumn Baker, Homer, Connections home school, grade 10; 3rd place, Audrey Russell, Homer High, grade 9. 

• Flash Fiction: 1st place, Jonas Noomah, Homer High, grade 11; 2nd place (tie), Chloe Pleznac, Homer, Connections home school, grade 8; 2nd place (tie), Sawyer Smith Vail, Steller Secondary School, grade 8; 3rd place (tie), Helen Martin, Petersburg, Mitkof Middle School, grade 8; 3rd place (tie), Sydney Guthrie, Petersburg, Petersburg High, grade 9.

• Poetry: 1st place, Annie Kessler, Palmer, Colony High, grade 9; 2nd place, Molly Mitchell, Homer High, grade 10; 3rd place (tie), Annie Kessler, Palmer; Colony High, grade 9; 3rd place (tie), Charles Lowell, Anchorage, West Anchorage High, grade 10.

All winners in both art and writing will be published in the summer issue of F Magazine.
