Florence Garay
Sept. 24, 1926 — Nov. 3, 2020
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020, Florence Garay died at the age of 94 in the comfort of her own bed in Homer, Alaska. She was surrounded by the love of family, including her son, Peter Garay.
Flo was born Sept. 24, 1926 in New Jersey into a Hungarian American family. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Language from Rutgers College. Flo enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Lt. Paul Nicholas Garay. Flo and Paul had two seafaring sons, Randy and Peter, of whom they were both very proud.
Flo was an intelligent and well-read woman, one of her favorite subjects being presidential history. After retiring from a career in education, she served two terms as president at her local Bay Area Planned Parenthood. Flo enjoyed a life of travel, book clubs, sewing and quilting, hosting dinner parties for friends and family, and baseball. Her family will remember a woman who was strong willed, independent, and who advocated fiercely for what she believed in.
Flo was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her son Randy; and her grandson Cody.
She is survived in life by her son, Peter; her brother Alexander; her cousin, Brenda; her five grandchildren, and her four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of a funeral service, Flo would ask that we all continue our civic duty to uphold an honorable democracy and continue to fight for women’s rights.
Flowers and condolences can be sent to the family of Peter and Teena Garay.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
