Florence passed away at 101 years of age at her home in Homer.
Florence worked at Lockheed during WWII, fabricating parts for the XP38 Lightning and served in the Cadet Nurse Corps. She moved to Alaska in 1953 with husband George Stebbins, living in Gulkana, Glenallen, Anchorage and Homer. Florence was active in early Anchorage, involving herself with the Campfire Girls, the Homemakers Association and many local charities.
A resident of Homer since 1983, Florence was know for her love of sandhill cranes, amazing chocolate chip cookies and her generous, nurturing spirit. The honorary “Grandmother” of the Burning Basket Project, Florence and her last husband Harold were often seen walking hand-in-hand all around town in the early 2000s.
Florence is survived by her children Steve Drew (Homer), Kathi Drew (Homer) Aleta Stebbins (Wasilla), Lesa (Stebbins) Klancher (Anchorage), eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands George Stebbins and Harold Penrod and ex-husband Larry Drew.
A memorial will be held at her home in Homer on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m., with ashes interred beside her beloved Harold in their home town of Kalispell, Montana on Oct. 7.
