The 14th annual Homer Burning Basket project of community interactive, impermanent art, is presented to Homer this coming Sunday afternoon at the build site at Mariner Park on the Homer Spit. Construction continues today through Saturday, and volunteers are invited to help finish the basket or provide nightly security.
The theme of the sculpture and event is “Shine: Basket of Remembrance &Unburdening.” The outdoor art project involves creating a large woven basket sculpture using locally gathered natural materials such as alder, wild grass, nettle and fireweed.
Installation artist Mavis Muller leads the build workshop at Mariner Park from noon to 8 p.m. today-Saturday to build the big basket.
On Sunday, Sept. 10, the basket will be given to the community for interaction by way of decorating it and creating a collage of positive written sentiments. At sundown the basket sculpture will be ignited and burned as a performance of fire-art. The interactive art project also includes the creating of a circular ground design of a walking labyrinth which is available for public participation.
