BEST KNOW YOUR LAND BET: Know Your Land, hosted at Kachemak Bay Campus by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Homer Soil and Water Conservation District, is a free weekly speaker series offered in person and on Zoom. Talks cover a variety of topics relating to gardening, farming and land management. Topics this year include high tunnels, low tunnels, irrigation, cover crops, vegetable varieties, mulch research, mycorrhizal fungi, soil health, soil testing, herbicides and forest management. BEST FUNDRAISER BET: The Alaska Japanese Club is hosting a Japanese cuisine fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 1 for the Teshio-Homer sister city exchange. The meal, held at the Homer United Methodist Church from noon to 3 p.m., will raise money to send five students to Hokkaido, Japan, and offers a variety of Japanese dishes including curry, yakisoba, miso, sushi, salad, homemade ramen, delicious desserts and green tea. Vegetarian options are available. Tickets are $40 for adults, $20 for children. There are 30 tickets left. BEST CRANIUM CUP BET: Registration is now open for the sixth annual Cranium Cup hosted by the Homer-Kachemak Bay Rotary Club. This event, part of Homer’s Winter Carnival celebration, will happen Saturday, Feb. 8 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Alice’s Champagne Palace. Teams of up to six members or individuals can register online at homerrotary.org for an evening of trivia, fun and prizes. Participants also can register at the event. Registration fees are $100 per team or $20 per individual. Money raised from the Cranium Cup helps support Rotary-sponsored improvements to Homer parks and other activities.
