Fresh Produce performs benefits
Fresh Produce 2.0, Homer’s improvisational comedy group, performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and next Thursday, Sept. 8, at The Art Barn, 1060 East End Road. Each performance benefits a local nonprofit, with the Friday show helping the Flex Healthy Food Program, the Saturday show helping the South Peninsula Hospital Diabetes Supply Fund and the Sept. 8 show helping Hospice of Homer. ‘Virginia Woolf’ opens Friday
Edward Albee’s classic dark comedy, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, closes the Pier One Theatre summer season with shows this weekend and next weekend. The play opens Friday and shows Saturday and Sunday this weekend and Sept. 1-3 next weekend. All shows are at 7:30 p.m., with general admission at $15. The comedy follows the academic couple of George and Martha over a single liquor-ridden night of warped fun and games with the younger Nick and Honey. It’s a drama about domestic disputes, the strife between married couples and truths buried until they erupt into revelation. Peter Sheppard directs the Pier One production, with Tyler Munns as George, Hillary Brant as Martha, Sage Dance-Wright as Honey and Owen Duffy as Nick.
Homer Burning Basket back
The Homer Burning Basket community art project returns for its 13th annual celebration with “Expand: A Basket of Remembrance and Unburdening.” Directed by lead artist Mavis Muller, the project invites the community to join in and create the interactive, impermanent art experience. Creation runs from noon-8 p.m. daily, Sept. 4-10, at Mariner Park on the Homer Spit. All are invited to join in the creating of a large sculpture of an intricately woven basket and walking labyrinth ground design using locally gathered natural materials.
At 1 p.m. Sept. 11 the basket is presented as a gift to the community. All are invited to interact with the big basket by decorating the outside; written personal sentiments can be tucked inside. All are invited to decorate and walk the circular path of Trilogy Labyrinth, an original design by Mavis Muller. At sundown that Sunday the basket will be ignited and burned in the theme of remembering departed loved ones, releasing burdens of the heart, and as a celebration of creativity and imagination. HCOA seeks art for Day of Dead show
The Homer Council on the Arts has put out a call for art for its Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, show. Submissions are due Sept. 10. For more information and submission guidelines, visit homerart.org.

Kachemak Bay Campus offers several art and writing classes this semester. Classes offered include:
• Ceramics, taught by artist David Kaufman;
• Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Painting, taught by artist Asia Freeman;
• History of World Art, taught by artist Diane Spence-Chorman;
• Poetry writing, taught by poet Erin Coughlin Hollowell;
• Personal essay writing, taught by writer Rich Chiappone, and
• Science and nature writing, taught by Nancy Lord.
