Backcountry film fest is today
The 12th annual Winter Wildlands Alliance Backcountry Film Festival shows at the Homer Theatre starting at 7 p.m. today. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The $10 admission benefits the Winter Wildlands Alliance, a nonprofit organization that educates and inspires the backcountry community to protect and care for their winter landscapes. Funds raised also support human powered recreation and conservation efforts, winter educaton and avalanche safety prograsm, and to raise awareness of winter management issues.

Climate change action art workshops set for February
The Kachemak Bay Conservation Society and Kachemak Bay Research Reserve hold three workshops, Bringing Climate Change to Your Art, this month. Workshops are held at 6 p.m. Feb. 14, 21 and 28 at the Research Reserve offices, 2181 Kachemak Drive.
The workshops offer an opportunity for scientists and artists to share ideas on using climate change action in art and are part of an art contest to be held at Earth Day ceremonies on April 22 at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. Artists can apply for grants
Artists in the fields of choreography, crafts, folk and traditional arts, literary arts and scriptworks, and performance art can apply for Rasmuson Foundation $7,500 project grants and $18,000 fellowships as well as a $40,000 distinguished artist award. Project grants are for short-term endeavors while the fellowships and distinguished artist award give artists the resources to concentrate and reflect on their work. The deadline is March 1. Fundraising deadline coming up for Storyknife writers retreat
Feb. 14 is the deadline for a fundraising effort to build the main house at Storyknife, a writers retreat for women founded by Homer writer Dana Stabenow. Peggy Shumaker and Joe Usibelli will match donations two-to-one for the main house to be named after the late poet, writer and scientist Eva Saulitis. Donors already have funded three of six cabins, but funds are still sought for the remaining three. Donations can be made by check to Storyknife at P.O. Box 75, Homer, AK 99603 (be sure to write “Eva’s House” on the comment line) or through the digital portal on generosity.com.
Pier One holds auditions for musicals this month
Pier One Theatre holds auditions at the Mariner Theatre for two upcoming musicals, “Chicago” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Auditions are 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12; 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.
The show dates for “Chicago” are June 30-July 15 at the Pier One Theatre on the Spit and for “Superstar” Oct. 6-15 at the Mariner Theatre. Audition material will be provided, but the directors will be using the following songs on which to base their decisions, so they encourage you to listen to these songs:
“Chicago”: “When You’re Good to Mama” (women), “Razzle Dazzle” (men), “All That Jazz” (women), “Mr. Cellophane” (men). “Superstar”: “The Last Supper chorus” (all), “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” (women), “Heaven on Their Minds” (men), “Damned for All Time” (men), “Gethsemane” (men). Only people interested in solo roles will be singing the appropriate songs from each show.
Doors are open 30 minutes before auditions. Auditions for chorus parts will be done first on Feb. 12, so people interested in auditioning for the chorus should come then. If unable to attend on Feb. 12, people can come on Feb. 13 or 19 for the “Last Supper” chorus. If you are unable to attend any of these audition dates but are interested in being in either show, contact Laura Norton at 299-2453 as soon as possible.
Pier one also is looking for players to be in the pit orchestras as well as folks interested in costumes, lights, sound, sets, backstage, promotion, etc.
