Kachemak Crane Watch seeks citizen scientists for sandhill crane surveys. Observers are asked to report adults, colts, or banded cranes seen by location and day for each count day on Aug. 29, Sept. 4 and Sept. 9. Friendship Center Adult Day Services is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday with extended hours for special situations.
Homer Senior Citizens
Homer Senior Citizens lunch is open to seniors and their guests and is served 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Friday. The lunch menu for this week is: today, roast pork loin; Friday, oven fried shrimp; Monday, closed for Labor Day; Tuesday, baked chicken; Wednesday, seafood stir fry.
Strong Women classes at Homer Senior Citizens Recreation Room are 2-3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Cost is $3 for members and $6 for nonmembers per class.

Kachemak Bay Campus
Beginning Drawing with artist Asia Freeman starts Sept. 5 and meets Tuesdays and Thursdays until December; register early. Five week, 2.5-hour classes in how to use MS Word and MS Excel start Sept. 7; sign up by Sept. 4. Mushrooms of Kachemak Bay- Introduction to Fungi of Alaska, a workshop with field studies, meets Sept. 13 -Sept. 15; register by Sept. 3. At 7 p.m. Sept. 7, Dr. Gary Laursen, mycologist, University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Arctic Biology, presents a public lecture, “Mushrooms and other Fungi of the Sub Antarctic Archipelago.”
Pratt Museum
Summer hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. “Inspired by Place,” selected art from the museum collection, is on exhibit downstairs in the Contemporary Art Gallery through December.
“Beneath the Surface,” featuring paintings by Rebecca Crowell that are inspired by archaeological maps of sediment layers beneath the earth, is on exhibit upstairs in the Special Exhibits Gallery through Sept. 29.
Tamamta Katurlluta, a Gathering of Native Traditions, is Friday and Saturday. It brings together hundreds of Native elders, as well as other Native and non-Native participants. Artists, dancers, drummers and story tellers come to experience a weekend of culture sharing and community building. Events include a welcome reception, traditional landing ceremony of kayaks, storytelling, Native Youth Olympic demonstrations plus an evening of culture and dance at the Mariner Theater.
R.E.C. Room
The REC Room (a Youth Resource & Enrichment Co-Op) offers new activities for the 2013-2014 School Year. Free programs include instruction on software installation and customization, digital music production, fresh and organic cooking, gardening. and slam poetry. The REC Room provides teens ages 12–18 with a safe space to hang out after school and get connected with positive resources, activities and programs available for youth in our community. It offers computers and wi-fi for homework, guitars, X Box Kinect, games, darts, rave gloves, movies, art supplies and more.
A program of Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic, the REC Room is always staffed by a program manager. HMS students can now ride Bus 65 for drop off at the REC Room. Call for details. Seldovia Village Tribe Health & Wellness Center

South Peninsula Hospital
The community is invited to an open house for the new South Peninsula Hospital Reflection Room from noon-2 p.m. Sept. 8 in the room on the lower level across from the cafeteria. The Reflection Room offers hospital visitors and staff a place to reflect, contemplate, meditate, pray or simply sit quietly. View the room and meet contributors to the project during the open house.
Applications are now being accepted to exhibit at the annual Rotary Health Fair, set for 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 2 at Homer High School. The fair is sponsored by Homer Kachemak Bay Rotary Club in partnership with South Peninsula Hospital. The purpose of the fair is to promote individual wellness and provide free and inexpensive information and screenings related to health. The theme is “It’s Your Life … Take a Day to Be Well.”
