The Kachemak Bay Birders meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center in the Auditorium. Please note this is later than their usual meeting time. Following the meeting, there will be a potluck meal and members will share slides of birds they have seen. Bring a dish to share at the potluck. There will be a fundraiser party for the planned boat house from 5:30-7:30 p.m. June 2 at Grace Ridge Brewing Company on Ocean Drive. The winner of a two-night stay for 10 people at the Second Star mansion in Homer will be drawn. There also will be other prizes. Any donations of $500 or more received before May 31 will be entered to win. There will be free hot dogs and soft drinks provided by the Lions Club. Grace Ridge Brewing beer will be available for purchase. 

The Homer Garden Club’s annual Plant Sale is 11 a.m. June 4 at the Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. Plant donations may be dropped off from 9-10:30 a.m.

Sign-up is open now for National Trails Day events in Kachemak Bay State Park on June 4. Help maintain trails across the bay in Kachemak Bay State Park. Learn, hike, help and enjoy dirt-cheap water taxi rides for only $20. Participants must sign up in advance by 5 p.m. Friday at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. Trail Projects include an overnight project June 3-4 on the Coalition Trail, work on Grace Ridge South, Sadie Knob, Glacier Spit and Tutka Bay, and a family hike and work on the Glacier Lake trail. The Homer Cycling Club also sponsors trail work on the Diamond Creek trail on June 5. The Homer Animal Friends Dog Jog is 10 a.m. June 5 starting at Mariner Park on the Homer Spit. Homer Animal Friends has teamed up with the Kachemak Bay Running Club to offer the 5-km beach walk and run. There will be free bandanas and refreshments for dogs with lots of raffle prizes.  Sandhill cranes have arrived on the lower Kenai Peninsula, including nesting pairs. Please report sandhill crane sightings to Kachemak Crane Watch at 235-6262 or email reports@cranewatch.org. Please leave a name and number so Crane Watch can call for more information.

Anchor Point Senior Citizens

The Anchor Point Senior Center on Milo Fritz Road is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-noon Friday. The center serves Thursday night dinners starting at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Bingo is at 6:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. on Friday nights. There is a Senior Center garage sale on June 4. Tables can be rented for $15. Call the center to rent tables. The Helping Hands Thrift Store is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exercise sessions are at 10 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Friendship Center

Friendship Center Adult Day Services is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday with extended hours for special situations. Programs are offered daily, including story time, crafts and musical performances. Call 235-4556.

Homer Senior Citizens

Homer Senior Citizens lunch is open to seniors and guests and is served noon-1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The lunch menu for this week is: today, baked ham and scalloped potatoes; Friday, baked rockfish; Monday, closed for Memorial Day; Tuesday, lasagna; Wednesday, to be announced. 

Strong Women classes are 1:30-2:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Homer Senior Center. The cost is $3 for members and $6 for nonmembers per class.

Zumba Gold classes with Maria are 11 a.m.-noon Tuesdays and 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Homer Senior Center. The cost per class is $4 for members, $6 for nonmembers.

Duplicate Bridge meets at 1 p.m. Thursdays. Tai chi classes are Thursdays at 3 p.m. The cost per class is $3 for members and $6 for nonmembers. Call Daniel Weisser at 235-4555.

Writers conference keynote speaker and former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Tretheway holds a public reading at 8 p.m. June 11 at the Mariner Theatre. Other attending authors and poets read at 7:30 p.m. June 12 at Alice’s Champagne Palace and 7:30 p.m. June 13 at Land’s End Resort. 

Pratt Museum

The museum gallery is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. seven days a week. Business offices are open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. 

“Art and Science of Bears” is on exhibit through July 31. 

The museum seeks volunteers for a variety of jobs, including front desk greeter, aquarium assistant, collections assistant, audio transcriber and Harrington Cabin interpreter. For more information, call the Pratt at 235-8635.

Road Closures

Expect delays (duration unknown), road closures and lane closures from 6 a.m.-6:30 p.m. through July 8 on the Old Sterling Highway. Maintenance crews are replacing culverts and there will be excavation on the road and ditches. Be alert to flaggers and prepared to stop. Expect narrow lanes, width restrictions, and workers and heavy equipment on the road. Motorcycle riders should use extreme caution. Long combination vehicles are prohibited as well as oversize vehicles and vehicles with trailers. 

South Peninsula Hospital

South Peninsula Hospital will offer a safe sitter class June 1-2. The class is designed for 11-14 year olds to teach basic child care, infant and child CPR, first aid, safety for the sitter, behavior management and business etiquette. 

 The class will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. Students should bring their own lunch. The cost is $75 per person, but scholarships are available based on need. Space is limited and registration is required. Call the hospital’s education department at 235-0258 for more information and to register.

The hospital is accepting proposals for an on-site, exterior coffee vendor at its main facility location at 4300 Bartlett Street. Proposals are due June 15. Guidelines and requirements are available at www.sphosp.org or by contacting Glenn Radeke, facilities director, at 235-0351.
