Homer High School students earned fifth place overall in the state National Ocean Science Bowl competition held last weekend in Seward.
Seventeen teams from all over Alaska participated.
Homer’s NOSB team consists of coaches Bruce Rife, a science teacher, and Kris Holderied of NOAA; and students Logan Reveil, Nolan Bunting, Axel Gillam, Sierra Moskios and Molly Mitchel.
Among the honors brought home by the Homer students:
• First place in the Remote Operated Vehicle competion with a perfect score of 125 points;
• Fifth place in the National Ocean Science Quiz Bowl;
• Sixth place on 20-minute research presentation; and
• Seventh place on a 20-page written research paper.
In addition, Logan Reveil received a $5,000 scholarship to the University of Alaska Fairbanks from Icicle Seafoods.
