In spite of having injured a shoulder while wrestling in the Seward Invitational on Oct. 25-26, Voznesenka’s sole wrestler, Gavril Kalugin, was back in the action at the Anchorage Christian School Invitational in Anchorage Nov. 1-2.
“His shoulder is doing better,” said Head Coach Justin Zank. “It was sore, but he wrestled through it. He placed fifth.”
In round one, Kalugin won by a fall over Zach Hamberger of Cordova in 1:31. Kalugin won the second round over Martin Gardiner of Dillingham by a decision, 8-5.
In the quarterfinals, Kalugin won by an injury default over Roger Miller of Wrangell in 2:26. In the semi-finals, he lost by a major decision to Josh Mendenhall of Bethel, 12-0.
After a loss by decision to Aaron Olsen of Bethel, 2-1, in the consolation semis, Kalugin scored a win by decision over Aucha Johnson of Unalakleet, 8-5.
This weekend, Kalugin travels to the Houston Invitational Nov. 8-9.
