Classical concert is next week
The Coastal Trio performs a classical concert at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at Bunnell Street Arts Center. Featuring Alaskans Elsa Bishop on vocals, Juliana Osinchuk on piano and Sharmin Piper on oboe, their concert, “Narratives,” features music for an intimate setting.
Soprano Elsa Bishop completed her bachelors degree from Southern Oregon University in 2011 with a double major in music and theater arts. During the winter she lives in California, where she is continuing her musical education in San Francisco, pursuing a master’s degree in opera performance. A lifelong Kachemak Bay snow bird, she resides seasonally in Halibut Cove, bringing music to the local community for annual recitals for many years. When she isn’t singing, she is probably on the ocean somewhere.
Sharman Piper has played principal oboe with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra for more than 30 years and has also has performed regularly with many other Anchorage musical organizations including the Alaska Chamber Singers, the Anchorage Concert Chorus, the Anchorage Opera, Arioso chamber ensemble and the Anchorage Fine Arts Society.
Alaska pianist Juliana Osinchuk has performed internationally to great critical acclaim since age 11, when she made a surprise debut in Carnegie Hall performing Beethoven’s Sonata op. 10 # 1 to rave reviews. Heidijo returns to Homer
Blues vocalist Heidijo returns to Homer, this time with New Orleans jazz pianist Tom McDermott, in a concert at 730 p.m. Aug. 16. Over the years the two musicians have cultivated an impressive duo performance. Both students of music, they have fun on stage igniting an infectious energy as they challenge each other’s musicality. Their show ranges from jazz and blues standards with Tom on piano and Heidjo’s vocals, to piano solo pieces from Tom’s extensive repertoire to Heidijo’s solo vocals and piano for a few of her original songs.
Heidijo’s original songs are classified as New Orleans R &B, blanketing the genres of blues, rock,and jazz. They challenge you with daunting lyrics delivered by a voice that has been described as an engaging dichotomy of sweet feminine sugar with smoky blues rawness. Tom McDermott and Heidijo met in Paris in 2006. Tom landed there to escape the devastation of Katrina and Heidijo had come from Anchorage to play music.
Years later, when Heidijo moved to New Orleans, they rekindled their friendship in addition to cultivating an impressive duo performance together. Art Guild seeks wearable art
Peninsula Art Guild/Kenai Fine Art Center invites artists to create a piece of wearable art for the 2017 Whimsical Wearable Arts. The deadline for applications and registration is 5 p.m. Oct. 28. Wearable arts are defined as clothing, footwear, hats, scarves, jewelry, up-cycled wearables and other adornments. To enter Whimsical Wearable Arts 2017, artists need to apply using a form available at Kenaifineart.com online and at Kenai Fine Art Center during open hours.
A registration form must accompany a fee of $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers (payable to Kenai Fine Art Center), via phone at 907-283-7040, in person, mailed to Box 703, Kenai, Alaska, 99611 or hand delivered to 816 Cook Ave., Kenai noon-5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. If entries are mailed, the artist is responsible for shipping both ways in structurally sound reusable containers. Include a return label with postage attached.
The show opens Nov. 2 and hangs through Nov. 25 at the Kenai Fine Art Center.
A judge will adjudge the show. Winners of the show will receive an award. A Viewers Choice Award will also be given at the end of the hanging. Artists not modeling their own creations are urged to get a model for their entries.
