A Homer man faces charges including burglary, assault and reckless endangerment after breaking into a home with a gun last month.

Roddy Hahnlen, 47, was charged on Aug. 8 with three counts of first-degree burglary and one count of third-degree assault, all felonies, and a count of reckless endangerment. Police said that about 2:30 a.m. July 24 he allegedly broke into the home of a Homer female relative of his and threatened her with a gun while she had been sleeping. Police found two bullet holes inside the house, one through a front window and the other through a breaker box. Police found another relative, a young woman, on the other side of the wall of the breaker box.

According to an affidavit written by officer Sean Perry of the Homer Police Department, Hahnlen kicked in the door of a residence. He threatened the woman in bed with a gun before shooting himself in the head, the affidavit states. When police responded to a report of a gunshot, they found Hahnlen on the floor of the home with a gunshot wound to the side of his head, where he explained that “he came to the residence with ill intent and decided to shoot himself before he hurt others,” Perry wrote.

Hahnlen is being treated for his injuries in Anchorage, and a warrant for his arrest has been issued, according to court documents.
