Volleyball wins, losses mark weekend action

It was a mix of highs and lows for the Mariners varsity volleyball team last week. After winning all three at-home games to Cordova on Friday, they lost two and won two on Saturday, then fell by two points in the tie-breaking fifth game.

Friday, the Mariners won 25-22, 25-11 and 26-24. Saturday, they lost the first two games 25-18 and 26-24; won the next two 25-11 and 25-14, and lost the fifth 17-15. 

“Overall, hitting errors on Saturday hurt the team’s efforts in the early sets and then they were able to find a better groove in the third and fourth sets,” said Head Coach Beth Trowbridge in an email after the games.

Serving was the team’s strength, according to Trowbridge. Having very few service errors was key to Friday night’s success. Maggie Larue lead the team Friday with seven service aces and 100 percent serving.

Jane Rohr led the team Saturday with six aces. Larue ended the weekend with 11 aces overall, followed by McKi Needham with eight, Larsen and Malina Fellows each with six and Maryhana Bowe with two.

Rohr also led the team overall in offense with a total 17 kills, seven on Friday and 10 on Saturday. Larsen Fellows followed closely with a total 16 kills, five on Friday and 11 on Saturday. Bowe played a solid middle hitter position and added 11 kills for the weekend with the team high hitting efficiency of 40 percent.

Needham, leading the offense on the team as the single setter, had 40 setting assists, 38 digs and four kills for the weekend. Malina Fellows contributed seven kills to the varsity team’s efforts over the weekend. Defensively, Larue led the back row digging effort with 40 digs overall, followed by Larsen Fellows with 21. Rohr added 15 digs from left back.  

The weekend play gives the Mariners a 5-4 in conference record. They have three more conference matches and two nonconference matches before the Region Tournament in early November.

This weekend the varsity heads to Grace Christian School for a tournament.  The C and JV teams will host a tri-meet with a Seldovia mixed-six  team and Ninilchik on Friday night and Saturday morning.
