Was there ever a friend so fickle as the weather? The Betster thinks not.

Just when she lulls us into a false sense of security with piercing sunshine and above freezing temperatures, Mother Nature has a mood swing of meteorological proportions and plunges us back into the pit of despair that is winter.

At least, that’s how it seems when one minute the average Homerite is warming their face in the sun, and the next battling through snow drifts that take up the whole road, struggling to see through the horizontal onslaught of snow and dust.

Of course, the Betster knows it’s simply too much to ask for the seasons to just make a decision and be one or the other already. Oh no, not here in the Great North.

So for now, the Betster will cope using one of several methods in order to muddle through until Spring has truly sprung. The minute there is a hint of that teasing sunlight, the Betster suggests to rush outside and soak it up before it fades. Playing favorite summer tunes also helps one to forget the snow accumulating outside.

If that doesn’t work, the Betster has been working on the sunshine equivalent of a rain dance, the results of which should be seen any day now.

BEST BEHIND THE SCENES BET: A great way to completely forget about what’s happening outside is to head in to the Pratt Museum for one of their Behind the Scenes Collections tours. They cost $5 and are held at 2 p.m. on Thursdays through the end of the month. These tours are in conjunction with the Curator’s Closet exhibit and are a chance to get up close to the thousands of wonderful historical objects kept in the Pratt’s Natural History and Cultural Collections. Call ahead to reserve a spot.

BEST BUILDING BET: What in the heck is an earth box, you might ask? Well, it’s a self-watering planter that can help you grow food and flowers more easily. You can learn about earth boxes, how to use them, and build your own in an upcoming Build Your Own Earth Box workshop. Supplies are included. The cost is $32 and the class takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday. It will be held at the private home of the instructor, at 2096 Jake’s Little Fireweed Lane.

BEST BUY IT BET: Whoever says teenagers are lazy clearly hasn’t gotten that message across to the group of high schoolers whose art will be featured in a First Friday art show tomorrow at Grace Ridge Brewery. The art that will be featured was made by students in Homer High School’s Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing program. The program allows students to design in an AutoCad program to then use a CNC plasma cutting machine to cut the art work out of metal. The students generated their own concepts and executed the designs independently. Their pieces will also be for sale, and all proceeds will benefit student learning by helping them purchase supplies. This event takes place from 5-7 p.m. Friday and is free to attend.

BEST BUSY BET: In those rare moments when the sun does show its face, Homerites should be outside enjoying it. What better place to do that than at the Homer Rope Tow on Ohlson Mountain Road?
