Wrestling: Conrad Woodhead, president of the Anchor Kings Wrestling Club, has another recap of how the team did at a tournament in Wasilla last weekend:
“Fifteen Anchor King Wrestlers headed to Nikiski last Saturday to their annual End of the Road Freestyle Wrestling Tournament, producing 11 individual medals.
“Miles Tressler had another dominating performance in the Intermediate 57-61 pound division, who marched through his bracket with two pins and two technical falls on his way to being crowned tournament champion. Michael Ritter followed suit in the Schoolboy 83-86 pound division with a 34 second pin of Brooks Mellen of Popeye Wrestling Club and a quick technical fall of Soldotna Whalers Wrestler Owen Hart to secure first place. And in dominating fashion, Russell Nyvall, who only needed 2:12 minutes to pin three opponents, also received a first place medal.
“Second place finishers included Justus Grimes in the Intermediate 57-61 pound division. His only loss came when he met Tressler in the last match of the day. Nyvall’s sister, Alysha, also received a second place medal in the Novice Girls 69-77 pound division. Nyvall’s only loss came at the hands of Gunnar Lervig from the Soldotna Whalers.
“Alex Moseley also received second place in the Junior Girls 128-133 pound division, along with Kyle Wells in the Junior 196-296 pound division. In the intermediate 62-66 pound division, Landyn Wood’s placed third, along with Alex Shea in the Intermediate 67-72 pound division, and Oak Jakmanee in the Novice 102-107 pound division.
“Noticeably absent from last weekend’s results are the Newman brothers, who are traveling this week to Western Regionals in Las Vegas, Nevada. Blake and Wayne will face competition from 28 States in Folkstyle, Freestyle, and Greco. Last year, Wayne was the Western Regionals Greco Champion.
