Friday is deadline for ‘Root’ mail-art show
Submissions are due Friday for “Root,” a mail-art show opening Nov. 3 at the Pratt Museum. Mail submissions to Root, P.O. Box 620, Homer AK 99603. The Homer Post office will hand cancel any art mailed from Homer so that it doesn’t have to go through Anchorage to be redistributed back to Homer.
“Just slap a stamp and an address on the piece directly. It’s a very nice thing for them to do,” said Root organizer Lynn Marie Naden.
Include a return address if you would like to have a documentary catalog sent back in return to all participants. All works will be sold in a silent auction ending at the Dec. 30 closing reception, with starting bids the cost of postage. All proceeds go to the Pratt Museum. The show opens Nov. 3.
Mini art workshops offered
Artist Christina Whiting has organized a series of mini art workshops to be held 6-9 p.m. Mondays upstairs at Alice’s Champagne Palace. She said she started the workshops as a way to shake people out of the sludge and complacency that come with the ever-increasing darkness.
“When the fireweed turns to cotton and the Sandhill cranes have migrated, slumber beckons and it’s a bit of a fight to fight back,” she said.

Pratt to donate 10 percent of Ritz Noir to Puerto Rico disaster relief
This year, the Pratt Museum will donate 10 percent of the net proceeds from its annual fundraiser to assist in disaster relief for communities in Puerto Rico. The Museum’s annual Ritz fundraiser is 7 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Pratt. Themed as a “Ritz Noir,” it will highlight the drama that unfolds among the exhibits when it’s night at the Museum. Event attendees will enjoy decadent hors d’oeurves and libations, dance with the Devil’s Club Orchestra, and be immersed in the mystery and grandeur of auction packages donated by community artists and businesses. Tickets this year are $60 and can be purchased from the Museum or at the Homer Bookstore.
Board President Sara Jackinsky said that “We appreciate the challenges faced by any coastal region disconnected from the networks of the contiguous states and we hope that our show of support will encourage and lift the spirits of our distant neighbors and remind us that we are connected to a larger community extending beyond Kachemak Bay.”
Executive Director Laurie Stuart said, “the Museum is grateful to have been the beneficiary of so much goodwill through volunteerism, membership, donations, and general community participation over the past 50 years. This is how we achieve our mission for the benefit of the whole region. In recognition of the fact that Homer is part of the global community, we are happy to use this opportunity to assist another community in need.”
Stuart hopes that the contribution raised for Puerto Rico will be over $2,000.
