BEST TURKEY TROT BET: The annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk and Food Drive returns on Thursday, Nov. 28 starting at 10 a.m. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. in the Homer High School Commons. The participation fee for this non-timed, noncompetitive event is two nonperishable food items that will be donated to the Homer Food Pantry. Each person who brings food will receive a ticket to enter the door prize drawing. All ages and fitness levels are welcome; no bicycles or dogs, please. The 5K out-and-back course starts and ends at Homer High School. This event is held in partnership between the Kachemak Bay Running Club and the Homer Community Recreation Division. BEST COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING BET: Community members are invited to attend a free Thanksgiving dinner at Homer United Methodist Church on Thursday, Nov. 28 from 2-4 p.m. HUMC is also looking for volunteers to set up, serve and clean up during the event. BEST PET FOOD DRIVE BET: Homer Animal Friends is seeking pet food donations through the month of November! The November Pet Food Drive benefits the Homer Food Pantry and runs through Nov. 30. All donations, including soft and dry cat foods, cat treats, soft and dry dog foods, and dog treats, can be dropped off at the Homer Animal Friends store, Homer Dog Trainers, or Grace Ridge Brewery. BEST HOUSEPLANT CARE BET: The Friends of the Homer Public Library are hosting a Houseplant Care for Beginners and Beyond event with a pop-up sale on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Come to the library to learn more about caring for your green friends. Local experts will talk about growing and propagating amaryllis, African violets, succulents, carnivorous pants and more. Find out how to keep an orchid alive and blooming and what steps to take when you leave home so your plants survive. For the pop-up sale, Jacque Peterson will be selling an array of whimsical jewelry and other great stocking stuffers to get your holiday gift giving a jump start. BEST HOLIDAY LIGHTS BET: Join the Homer Chamber of Commerce for their Annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Thursday, Dec. 5, starting at 5:30 p.m.! Witness the tree lighting while enjoying another festive performance by the KP Brass Band and the arrival of Santa, escorted by the Homer Volunteer Fire Department. HCOC will also host activities including kids’ crafts, hot cocoa and more! This event is free and open to the public. 201 Sterling Highway.
BEST HARVESTING KINDNESS BET: Join the spirit of the season by helping the Homer Community Food Pantry with their fall canned and non-perishable food drive! HCFP gives out nearly 1,000 cans, produce and food items each Monday, feeding between 140-170 families, and daily stock their Community Free Fridge for those in need. They also send boxes across Kachemak Bay and provide food support to Anchor Point, Nikolaevsk and over 100 students at Homer High School and Homer Flex High School.
