House District 6 race unchanged in first update since Election Day

Neither incumbent Rep. Sarah Vance or challenger Brent Johnson have claimed 50% of votes in the race

Neither incumbent Rep. Sarah Vance or challenger Brent Johnson have claimed 50% of votes in the race for House District 6, after the State Division of Elections on Friday published the first updated numbers for the district since the night of the election.

In the new results, updated around 6:30 p.m. Friday, roughly 1,200 votes have been added to the counts.

Vance holds 4,838 votes, 47.4% — slightly less than the 47.69% she held the morning after the election. Brent Johnson added roughly half a percent over his election night totals, now claiming 4,449 ballots and 43.5%.

Dawson Slaughter holds 930 votes, good for 9.1%. When ranked choice voting is tabulated next week, the second choice votes of the people who cast their ballots for Slaughter will be attributed to Vance and Johnson, pushing one of the two over the 50% margin.

Friday’s update comes after all the other Kenai Peninsula districts were updated with a large batch of results published on Tuesday. Division officials said that was because of a delay in verifying voter history for early voters in the district. Tuesday’s update included remaining early ballots cast between Nov. 1 and Election Day.
