The visiting Kenai Central football team defeated Homer 39-8 on Friday in Mid Alaska Conference action.

The final game of the regular season was for the No. 3 seed in the Division III playoffs. Kenai (3-2 in the league, 4-4 overall) will play at No. 2 Redington, while Homer (2-3, 3-5) will play at No. 1 Barrow.

The Kardinals forced six turnovers in the game. Cole Langham had two interceptions, while Zach Armstrong had an interception and fumble recovery, and Isaac Potton had a fumble recovery.

“Complete team effort,” Kenai head coach Jake Brand wrote in a text message. “They came out of the gate ready.

“We coached them to start the playoffs this week instead of next. And they answered. Really played together and for each other. Very proud of them.”

The Kardinals grabbed a 24-0 lead after the first half on a fumble return from Bobby Hayes, a touchdown run from Aasen Campanella, a field goal from Sawyer Vann and a touchdown pass from Tony Perez to Zane James.

Perez finished off the scoring in the second half on touchdown passes to Vann and James. Langham and Garrett McCanna also had a tackle for safety.

Homer was able to get a touchdown pass from Preston Stanislaw to Emelian Melkomukov in the fourth quarter.

The varsity Mariners will travel to Barrow for the State Semifinal on Saturday, Oct. 12.
