Homer, Anchor Point to host Fourth of July celebrations

In line with the chamber’s 75th anniversary, this year’s theme is “Historical Homer.”

This Fourth of July weekend is going to be a busy one, with a full schedule of events in both Homer and Anchor Point.

Homer Parade

The Homer Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their annual parade on Pioneer Avenue, a “highlight … bringing together local businesses, civic organizations, non-profits, associations and individuals of all ages.” In line with the chamber’s 75th anniversary, this year’s theme is “Historical Homer.” Parade participants are encouraged to “embrace the theme” by dressing in costumes or showcasing elements from Homer’s rich past.

The parade will start at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, and proceed along the route from Homer High School, down Pioneer Avenue and finish at the Woodside Avenue parking lot. Parade participants will be eligible for prizes in Homer Bucks for the following categories:

Antique Cars, Trucks & Machinery — $50

Animals — $50

Performing Arts — $50

Red Lantern Prize — $50

Best Use of Theme — $75

Best Children’s Group — $75

Best of Show — $75

Judge’s Favorite — $75

Homer American Legion

The Homer American Legion Post 16 will be hosting a Fourth of July carnival on Thursday, July 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be games and prizes, face painting, cotton candy, a pie auction and a barbecue. The American Legion Post 16 is located at 2410 East End Road.

Anchor Point VFW

The VFW Post 10221 is bringing back their annual schedule of events, celebrating Fourth of July all weekend long.

A parade will take place on Thursday, July 4, at noon in Anchor Point. Any and all are welcome to join. For information on how to join the parade, or for other details, contact VFW canteen manager Heidi Adams at 907-399-6025.

Parade participants must line up at Chapman School at 11 a.m. The parade will commence from Greatland Worship Center, located at 7358 School Street, connect to HMS Resolution Road, then turn right on Milo Fritz Avenue and end at the VFW.

A potluck barbecue will follow the parade at 1 p.m. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided. Community members are encouraged to bring a dish to share and join in on the fun.

The VFW will host a burger night on Friday, July 5 from 5-7 p.m.

The festivities on Saturday, July 6 will kick off at noon with the annual duck race on the Anchor River.

A coin hunt and other kids’ games will take place at 2 p.m., coinciding with a pool tournament also at 2 p.m. The VFW will host a steak night from 5-7 p.m., with live music provided by Butch Leman starting at 6 p.m.

The weekend winds down on Sunday, July 7 with a matinee bingo session at 1:30 p.m., followed by a horseshoe tournament at 2 p.m. and a shuffleboard tournament at 5 p.m.
