Former Homer and Anchor Point resident Gilbert Franklin Marick Jr., 76, died July 6, 2013, at his home in Burlington, Kan., with his companion, Gretchen Hanson, at his side.

Gilbert was born on April 23, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Gilbert F. Marick Sr. and Gladys “Dixie” Erwin Marick.

He grew up in Europe. He attended college for two years in England. He had been in the U.S. Navy and had served on the Dorsch. He later was in the Merchant Marines. He had traveled extensively, finally settling in Alaska, where he lived around the state, including Homer and Anchor Point. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

“Gil was memorable and indelible. He never met an animal he didn’t like. His life was too full to sum up in a paragraph. Although he died in Kansas his heart was always in Alaska,” said his companion, Gretchen Hanson. “I and all who knew him will miss him so much.”

Gilbert is survived by his companion, Gretchen Hanson; a sister, Virginia Britton, of Farmington, Mich., and a cousin, Howard Marick, of New Hampshire.

As to his wishes, he was cremated. The Anchor Point Veterans of Foreign Wars will have a memorial for him and his ashes will be spread over his favorite hunting and fishing places.
