The Virl “Pa” Haga VFW Post 10221 will both celebrate the start of summer and honor America’s fallen service members in a series of events this weekend in Anchor Point.
Kick off the weekend with Friday night burgers, served from 5-7 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help clean up the Anchor Point Cemetery and Sterling Highway in Anchor Point, starting at noon on Saturday. Participants should meet in the VFW parking lot to pick up trash bags and safety vests and establish their cleaning routes. A potluck meal for volunteers will follow the cleanup.
Also on Saturday, bring your kids over for a coin hunt at 12:30 p.m. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served at 1 p.m. while the VFW hosts a chili cookoff and the Auxiliary prize tree. A horseshoe tournament will take place at 2 p.m., followed by a pool tournament at 5 p.m.
Join matinee bingo on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., followed by a potluck meal at 3 p.m. A shuffleboard tournament will start at 3 p.m., followed by a dart tournament at 6 p.m.
On Memorial Day, taking place on Monday, May 27, the VFW will hold memorial services at three local cemeteries for fallen service members. The day will begin with a service at the Homer Cemetery at 10 a.m., followed by services at the Anchor Point Cemetery at noon and at the Ninilchik Cemetery at 2 p.m.
