I’m just going to brag. The Homer Farmers Market is the best. I certainly haven’t been to many other markets around, but I guess others think so, too, since it gets so much attention.
The Daily Meal ranks the best farmers markets in America annually. This year Homer Farmers Market made that list. Delish.com picked the best market for each state and, yes, our market was the Alaska representative.
Another fun bit of recognition came from the national Farmers Market Coalition recently. They not only had a nice story and interview with Market Director Robbi Mixon, but they handed over their Instagram account to her for a week and now have a bunch of our wonderful familiar faces on their website.
A lot of the glamour that these onlookers see at our market when they come to visit has to do with the products available. The level of craftsmanship that can be seen is noted, the variety of vegetables is noted, and the services and activities available are noted. They love to see potatoes named “Magic Molly,” oysters and salmon, and birch syrup.
They also note the community garden, the SNAP benefits, and the Chef at the Market. There is simply so much happening at our market that makes it stand out.
None of it would be possible without the market’s stellar staff. Robbi Mixon has been running the show for six seasons now and all kinds of things have sprouted up since she took the reins. Not just vegetables and high tunnel programs and kids and mushrooms and SNAP benefit programs, but also the Kids’ Activities tent and the Market coins and the Chef at the Market demonstrations.
(And this Saturday’s Chef at the Market from 1-3 p.m. will show you how to build an Asian slaw with the fresh cabbage you find and the recipe you get from Chef Margarida Kondak.)
So when you are down there this this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m., feel free to look around and feel proud. Customers keep the market going as much as paid staff, volunteers, vendors and board members. We all built this market.
Kyra Wagner is the coordinator of Sustainable Homer and the Homer Farmers Market’s biggest fan — or at least one of them.
