Homer has been picked as the No. 4 best small town arts scene in America, the Homer Chamber of Commerce announced on Facebook last Tuesday, March 26.
The nomination comes as part of USA Today’s 2024 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards. The competition began earlier this year when Homer was selected by an expert panel from the publication for readers to vote on their top 10 choices. The poll closed Feb. 18.
“What each of these towns lacks in size, they make up for with museums, art galleries, performing arts, and busy event calendars,” USA Today wrote in the award announcement on March 1.
About Homer, USA Today noted the community’s “full calendar of vibrant events throughout the year to showcase local, national and international artists.”
“Homer brings together a variety of arts and entertainment … Think painting, theater, music, writing, and much more. As such, you can take part in a local workshop, catch the latest theatrical performance, or visit some of the art galleries,” the website states.
Homer chamber Executive Director Brad Anderson said of the award, “It’s really reassuring, to get that national recognition, that we have one of the strongest arts scenes in Alaska. Overall, the arts scene in Homer is pretty special, and it’s growing. It’s very, very vibrant, and we’re very fortunate.”
In their announcement on Facebook, the chamber congratulated all artists in the Homer community.
“You are making an impact,” the chamber wrote.
