Homer boys place 8th, girls 11th at Mountain City Wrestling Invite

Mariners have several finalists, including two first-place champions and two second-place finishes.

The Homer Mariners wrestling boys and girls teams traveled up to Anchorage to compete in the Mountain City Wrestling Invite over the weekend.

With 41 scoring girls teams present and 39 scoring boys teams, the tournament was a glimpse into some of the competition Mariners can expect to face at the Division II state tournament later this year.

The Mariners fared well, coming out with 11th place for the girls team and eighth place for the boys.

Soldotna won the girls tournament, while Bethel won the boys tournament.

Homer was boosted by strong performances from first-place finishers Saoirse Cook at girls 126 (won championship match by decision, 2-0) and Justus Grimes at 135 (won championship match in overtime by decision, 5-4).

Cook racked up 32 points in five matches to be 5-0 in-tournament, with four pinfalls en route to her decision win in the championship. Grimes came up just behind with 28 points in four matches (two wins by pinfall, two by decision).

The Mariners had another pair of finalists in Roane Cook at girls 185 and Paul Minke at 145, who both finished second.
