Katherine Miller of Homer was named to the Northern Michigan University dean’s list for the fall 2013 semester. Miller qualified by having a grade point average of 3.25-3.99.

Scholarships, contests, etc.

The following American Legion scholarships have a March 1 application deadline:

National President’s Scholarship: $1,500 plus, gifted to high school seniors who are daughters, sons, greats and step-great children of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion; eligibility dates are on the scholarship application; no Legion membership is required.  

Non-Traditional Auxiliary Scholarship: $1,000, for continuing students who are members of the Legion, Auxiliary, or Sone of the American Legion (Legion Family).

Auxiliary Spirit of Youth Scholarship: $1,000, must be a Junior Auxiliary Member for the past three years and hold a membership card for the current (2013) year; this is a four-year award.

Department of Alaska – Richard D. Johnson Memorial: $1,000, for any high school senior who may not be able to get a scholarship and is ready to make a commitment  to post-secondary education.

Merrilyn Stock Memorial Scholarship: $500-$1,000; for continuing students who are members of the Legion Family.

Check for applications for scholarships at all high school counselor offices in the greater Homer area, Connections, Flex School, schools across the bay, and at American Legion Post 16. For more information or applications, contact Darlene, 235-6789, or the post at 235-8864. Several of these scholarships have a $500 Homer-winner award.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 Scholarships: $500; for high school senior C-B students; deadline is April 1.

Through the Better Business Bureau, one $1,000 scholarship and one $1,500 scholarship will be awarded in each of three areas served by BBB: Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. The Students of Integrity scholarship support students who recognize the importance of ethical and responsible marketplace practices. Applications and eligibility information can be found at akorww.bbb.org/scholarship. Deadline is March 1. Winners will be announced inApril.

Homer Electric Association: HEA will award a number of academic or vocational scholarships in 2014. The scholarships are available to high school seniors from each of HEA’s three district and adults wishing to continue their education. The deadline for submitting applications is 5 p.m. Feb. 28. Applications are available online at www.homerelectric.com, at HEA offices in Homer and Kenai, and at Kenai Peninsula schools. Scholarship recipients will be presented with their scholarship award at the HEA annual meeting at Soldotna High School, May 1.

In addition, Homer Electric Association scholarships for the annual Youth Rally in Idaho are offered. High school sophomores and juniors are eligible for an all-expense-paid week in Caldwell, Idaho, from July 7-12, to enhance leadership skills, learn about cooperatives and participate in trust and teambuilding exercises. Applications are available at homerelectric.com. Deadline is April 4.

Homer Electric Association also sponsors an electric safety poster contest for third- and fourth-graders Prizes include $50-$100 VISA gift cards Deadline is April 4. For rules, visit 222.homerelectric.com. 

Homer Marine Trades now has applications available for its $1,000 scholarship for graduating seniors or prior year graduates wanting advanced vocational education and training. The applications have been sent to school counselors and are available online at homermarinetrades.com. The goal of the scholarship is to fill the positions Homer Marine Trades has available now and in the future.

Kenai Borough Employees Association scholarship committee is seeking applications for three scholarships, each $500. The scholarships are acailable to all 2014 graduates of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, including public schools, private schools and home-schooled. Applications and instructions are available from any Kenai Peninsula Borough high shcool counselor or at borough.kenai.ak.us. The deadline is March 28. Applications can be mailed or dropped off at the kenai Penisula Borough, KBEA Scholarship Committee, 144 N. Binkley St., Soldotna, AK 99669.
