The visiting Homer football team defeated Kodiak 52-0 on Friday in Mid Alaska Conference action.
The Mariners, the defending Division III champions, move to 1-0 in the league and 3-0 overall. Kodiak drops to 0-1 in the league and 0-3 overall.
The Mariners grabbed a 38-0 lead after the first half en route to the blowout win.
“The emphasis for the week was to start out fast and keep that momentum going through halftime, which we did,” Homer head coach Justin Zank told Homer News on Monday, Aug. 28. “With travelling 14 hours on a ferry to get there the day of and still perform the way we did, I’m very pleased with how we did.”
In one half of work, Preston Stanislaw continued to impress at quarterback. He rushed 16 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He also passed for 73 yards and a score to CJ Burns.
Jake Tappan also had a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first half.
The Homer defense contributed to the fast start, forcing four turnovers in the first half. Tappan, Austin Briscoe and Oak Anderson had interceptions, while Donovan Milstead and Nikifor Reutov had fumble recoveries.
“We also wanted to tighten defense, which we did, causing four turnovers and limiting Kodiak to 10 yards total offense,” Zank said.
In the second half, backup quarterback Chris Martishev ran wild, with 10 rushes for 99 yards and two scores.
Filling in for Stanislaw starting in the third quarter, Martishev “ran the offense really well,” Zank said.
Zank also highlighted Homer middle linebacker Wyatt Counts for leading the team in tackles with 10.5. Reutov and Martishev each also had 5.5 tackles.
Homer stays in conference play Saturday, traveling to Kenai Central at 2 p.m.
“It’ll be a fun one,” Zank said. “There’s a rivalry there, and we’re going to their place so it’ll be a little rowdy. We’re looking forward to a tough game.”
