Homer High School is offering a Red Cross lifeguard training class for teenagers over the age of 16 at the Kate Kuhn’s Aquatic Center Aug. 18-20. The instructor will be Kenai Peninsula School District employee Bethany Miller. Other prerequisites for the course are:

1. The ability to swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Trainers may use the front crawl stroke, breast stroke or a combination of both.

2. Completion of a event within one minute, 40 seconds. This can be demonstrated by swimming 20 yards and diving down 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound brick and swimming 20 yards back to the starting point with both hands on the brick and exiting the pool without using the ladder.

3. Treading water for two minutes using only legs.

Students must attend all three days in order to receive the certification. After completion, if students are interested in working for the pool the hourly rate is $18 per hour for Junior Lifeguards (less than one-year experience) and $20 per hour for Senior Lifeguards (more than one-year experience and 18 or older).
