Homer Police Department alerted the public last week to recent reports by bar patrons that their drinks had been spiked.
In a March 7 Facebook post, the department warned, “We’ve had a handful of reports in the last few months from people reporting their drinks were spiked at the bars in Homer.”
Homer Police Lt. Ryan Browning said via email the department has received “four or five” reports from people who felt as if their drinks were mixed with a sedative.
“They all report having had 1-2 drinks followed by unreasonable intoxication, memory missing from the night and aches and pains the following day,” Browning said. Incidents have reported by both men and women.
Drink spiking occurs when another drug is placed unknowingly in a person’s drink with mal intent, Browning said.
The police department plans to hold a discussion session with local bar owners about the issue, Browning said, although a date had not yet been set.
The police department will also host a women’s self-defense class on Sunday, March 26 from 2-6 p.m. If you are interested in registering, email Browning at rbrowning@ci.homer.ak.us or call the Homer Police Department at 907-235-3150. Details are still being worked out for where the class will be held, but anyone who registers will receive final information from Browning.
