The Houston boys and Bethel girls basketball teams won championships at the Homer Winter Carnival on Thursday through Saturday at Homer High School.
The Houston boys completed a 3-0 run through the tournament Saturday by toppling Homer 87-53. The Mariners were 0-3 at the tournament and are 2-15 overall.
Morgan Techie had 17 for the Mariners, while Lance Seneff had nine, Nathan Overson had eight, Riley Huffman, Lucas Story and Einar Pederson had six, and Spencer Dye had one.
For Houston, Cole Taylor had 26, Hayden Howard had 25, Noah Whitted had 16, Keldin Nicoll had nine, Carter Seime had five, Deegan Van Dussen had four and Max Taylor had two.
In other boys action, Kotzebue topped Bethel 62-52 to finish second. The Huskies were second at 2-1, while the Warriors were third at 1-2.
The Bethel girls lost to Kotzebue 60-39 on Saturday, but still won the title at 2-1. Homer beat Houston 47-32 to finish 2-1 at the tourney and move to 5-12 overall, but Homer had lost to Bethel on Friday so the Warriors had the tiebreaker. Houston was third at 1-2, while Kotzebue was fourth at 1-2.
Against Houston, Sydney Shelby paced Homer with 17 points, while Minadora Reutov added 10, Channing Lowney and Hannah Stonorov had six, Lawson Alexson had five and Bethany Engebretsen had three.
For Houston, Grace Gillespie and Anna Whitted had seven, Abbie Baird and Savanna Undem had six, Dallas Winter had three, Abbie Allen had two and Josie Rentsma had one.
In the Friday loss to Bethel, Lowney had nine to lead the Mariners, while Shelby had five, Alexson had four, Reutov and Engebretsen had two and Gracie Miotke had one.
Isabel Lieb dumped in 15 points to lead the Warriors, while Briella Herron had 12.
The Homer boys lost 53-37 to Bethel on Friday.
Techie had 10 for Homer, while Overson had eight, Seneff had seven, Huffman had six, and Story, Henry Wedvik and Theo McDonough had two.
Greg Turner led the way for the Bethel boys by pouring in 20.
Also Friday at the tournament, the Houston girls defeated Kotzebue 59-42 and the Houston boys defeated Kotzebue 75-48.
Thursday, the Homer girls topped Kotzebue 38-26.
Engebretsen paced Homer with 11 points, while Lowney had eight, Reutov, Alexson and Miotke had four, Shelby had three, and Stonorov and Emily Owens had two.
Zaina McConnell paced Kotzebue with seven.
The Homer boys took a 67-61 loss to Kotzebue on Thursday.
Techie had 18 for Homer, while Overson had 13, Hoffman had 10, Story had eight, Seneff had six, Trent Fell had five and McDonough had one.
Zach Roetman, Tyran Lane and Devin Sheldon all had 13 for Kotzebue.
Also at the tournament Thursday, the Bethel girls defeated Houston 54-43 and the Houston boys defeated Bethel 72-42.
The girls MVP was Gillespie. All-tournament was Briella Herron of Bethel, Baird, McConnell of Kotzebue, Alexie of Bethel and Engebretsen.
Engebretsen won the free-throw contest, while Shelby won the 3-point contest.
The boys MVP was Taylor. All-tournament was Sheldon of Kotzebue, Howard, Whitted, Roetman of Kotzebue and Techie.
Madden Cockroft of Bethel won the free-throw contest, while Taylor was the 3-point champ.
