Based on counts of visitors who stopped by the Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, tourist numbers declined compared to 1996. For June and July in 1996, 8,300 people visited. In 1997 for the same months, 6,700 visited. Chamber director Derotha Ferraro blamed in-state competition from attractions like the Seward SeaLife Center.

In his first DUI case following his return to the bench after a sabbatical, Judge James Hornaday sentenced an Idaho man to 10 days in jail for driving under the influence. Dennis Ide, 30, a cannery worker, broke his leg and pelvis when he drove his truck off the Spit Road onto rocks below on July 13. Hornaday said he sentenced Ide to more than the mandatory minimum because of the severity of the crash and Ide’s high blood-alcohol level.

The Homer Society of Natural History held its membership meeting at the museum. Officer and committee reports were presented by Margaret Pate, treasurer; Bob Gerbitz, building committee chairman; Vega Pratt, coin committee chairwoman, and Homer Thompson, ways and means committee chairman. Anne Pickering was appointed membership committee chairwoman. Freda Coles, refreshment committee chairwoman, reported on the need for a new electric coffee urn.
